Keep Up The Good Work

Thursday, November 26th, 2009

I wrote the other week about the fact that it’s not about the technology, and have had a number of conversations this week where people have proven themselves to be in violent agreement, which is great. Having said that, we continue to be in this frame of mind where IT tries to drive organisational behaviour. Fortunately, real people seem to be fighting back.

Ben Young blogged the other day about wearing your customers shoes for a day, and from an IT point of view, the customers are the people who have to use the systems and tools that we provide. Increasingly, the customers within the enterprise  are pushing the technology changes. Consumer technology is becoming so powerful, and more importantly USEFUL, that people are asking simple questions of their business tools.

  • “Why can’t i share documents like i do at home?”
  • “Why is it so hard to see a particular file?”
  • “Why can’t we just use IM and video chat?”
  • “Why does b****y IT make everything so difficult?!”

(There are numerous true stories about the lunacy of processes within big business (just read any Dilbert book!) – feel free to share your own in the comments)

And to be honest – these are good, valid, and often testing questions. There are more and more tools available that can mirror what the consumer world is doing.

Keep up the good work, keep asking the questions, and gradually these technologies and ways of working will become the norm, rather than the exception.

Around The World With Google Apps: Sites, Coding, Reviews, Microsoft Office 2010 …

Friday, November 20th, 2009

A few Google Apps links we discovered during the week that we think you’ll get a kick out from around the world:

  • RWW: Google Sites Offers Templates; Claims It’s Easier Than Sharepoint
  • Code Labs: Closure Tools

Closure is a set of individual JavaScript tools that are also designed to help developers build complex web applications, and is used by Gmail, Google Maps, and Google Docs.

  • Google Apps Help: What kind of scanning/indexing of user data is done?

User content is only scanned or indexed in the following cases to provide you with a high-quality service.

    • Some user data, such as email messages and documents, are scanned and indexed so your users can search for information in their own Google Apps accounts.
    • Email is scanned so we can perform spam filtering and virus detection.
    • Email is scanned so we can display contextually relevant advertising in some circumstances.
  • OffiSync

Bringing the power of Google to Microsoft Office

  • ZDNetAsia: Comfort, trust give Office edge over Google

“What we’ve observed and what our customers are coming back to tell us, is that [Google's] understanding of the needs of the enterprise market is still pretty early-on. Google doesn’t seem to have a super-rich understanding of what their customers are telling them in terms of what functionality they need,” Kurt DelBene, Microsoft’s senior vice president of Office productivity, said.

  • MSPMentor: MSPs Embracing Google Apps

The key takeaway: I’m not suggesting the MSP masses will embrace Google Apps. But a growing number of folks are taking the plunge. And I think we’ve all learned not to underestimate the search giant

  • Channel Web: Microsoft Office Web Apps Vs. Google Docs

… if a business is looking to move to a real, cloud-based productivity suite, then Google Apps offers far more functionality that Office Web Apps.

  • WaveAdept blog: Google Apps v Microsoft BPOS
  • Twitter, @bbhermann – anyone confirm or deny this?

Google Apps Sync doesn’t work with Office 2010

Global Entrepreneurship Week

Friday, November 13th, 2009

Wellington is having a number of events this week to celebrate entrepreneurship as a career path and foster this spirit amongst the business community. Mike and I went along to Wellington to the World on Tuesday evening and listened to some inspired and inspirational people, including Richard MacManus of ReadWriteWeb. We particularly agreed with his point about business being about the culture and not about the tools!

One of the highlights for me however was seeing some of Wellington’s up and coming stars and hearing their 7 minute pitch. In no particular order:

Indigo Renderer - Awesome tool for graphics professionals. From their own website: “Indigo is a photorealistic renderer which simulates the physics of light to achieve near-perfect image realism. Incorporating an advanced physical camera model, a super-realistic materials system and the ability to simulate extremely complex lighting situations through Metropolis Light Transport, Indigo Renderer is capable of producing the highest levels of realism demanded by architectural and product visualisation.” In short – it was over my head but the images produced by it were incredible!

Yonix – Really interesting looking tool for capturing business requirements for development, and I look forward to seeing this more in the future with interest.

Kids++ Anything that looks to make computers a better, safer and more interesting learning tool for kids is OK by us! Very interested to see this working now and see where it goes!

Beetil Finally – Dan from Beetil did a presentation of their SaaS tool to take the pain out of service management – really impressive and great to see the potential opportunities here.

Its really good to see all the local companies coming up with such awesome products and wish them well – Bravo
